Comments:

While Western markets received the standard export "Jazz Bass Special" (often featuring a TBX tone circuit or painted necks), the PJ36 was the designation for the passive, streamlined model. Despite bearing the "Jazz Bass Special" text on the headstock, the model is physically an hybrid. It combines a comfortable, slim Jazz Bass neck profile with a slightly downscaled, lightweight Precision Bass body shape. The wider Jazz Bass Special line is historically famous for being the primary instrument of Duff McKagan (Guns N' Roses) during the Appetite for Destruction era. Although McKagan played an export version, the PJ36 shares the exact same iconic aesthetic, hybrid design, and pickup configurations. In the mid-to-late 1980s, Fender's US production was transitioning facilities. Collectors and players widely consider the MIJ instruments built by FujiGen during this era to have unmatched build reliability and quality control that frequently rivaled or exceeded American production.
