This 1995 Gretsch 6122-62 is a Japanese reissue of the iconic 1962 double-cutaway design famously associated with the guitar legends who defined the "Gretsch Sound". The model originally debuted in 1957 as the single-cutaway Chet Atkins "Country Gentleman". By 1962, it transitioned into a thinner, double-cutaway hollowbody body profile. In the early 1980s, Chet Atkins withdrew his official endorsement from Gretsch to sign with Gibson. When Fred W. Gretsch revived the brand in 1989/1990 with manufacturing at the Terada Factory in Japan, Gretsch no longer held the legal rights to use Atkins' name. Consequently, the model was renamed the Country Classic II (with the "II" representing the double-cutaway configuration). The 1962 specification layout replicates the exact style of Gretsch guitar George Harrison played during the height of Beatlemania, most notably on the iconic 1964 Ed Sullivan Show broadcast. To curb stage feedback at higher volumes while retaining the true resonance of a fully hollow body, this era of the 6122-62 utilizes painted/simulated f-holes rather than open cutouts.
