Martin originally introduced the 16 Series to bridge the gap between their budget laminate guitars and the high-end Standard Series (like the D-18 and D-28). It allowed Martin to offer a 100% solid wood acoustic guitar at a working musician's price point. It also served as a testing ground for newer manufacturing methods. The "GT" in the model name stands for Gloss Top. This indicates that the Sitka spruce top features a high-polished gloss finish, while the solid mahogany back and sides retain an understated satin finish.
